There are inherent cellular differences in how males and females process pain, but determining which sex has a higher pain tolerance is complex. Sensory neurons called nociceptors detect painful stimuli, which vary in perception between sexes. Studies indicate that women generally have higher pain sensitivity and lower pain thresholds than men. For example, women are more sensitive to mechanical pain and heat stimuli. Jeffrey Mogil of McGill University notes that numerous studies, despite varying significance, consistently show females as more sensitive to pain than males.
