We propose a model to reduce semantic redundancy in extractive summaries by using a clustering algorithm to select diverse sentences and an improved BERT for scoring. Evaluated on the CNN/DailyMail datasets, our method outperforms six baselines, demonstrating the effectiveness of the K-means algorithm for more accurate, less repetitive summaries.

This paper presents Bag-of-Concept Graph (BACON) to enhance models with Vision Language Models (VLMs) for tasks like detection, VQA, and image generation. BACON structures annotations into basic elements in a graph, using VLMs and segmentation methods to create a 100K annotated image dataset. This enables accurate BACON generation, transformation, and interactive modification, improving task performance.

⚛️ Physics and Chemistry

Researchers have advanced "slidetronics," a new type of ferroelectricity in boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), where electrical properties change as layers slide over each other. BN-based devices can operate at room temperature and gigahertz frequencies without losing properties, promising for non-volatile memory. Ferroelectricity, used in digital storage and optoelectronics, allows materials to change electrical properties under an electric field.

A new theory has deciphered the mechanisms of fracture in soft materials, revealing that fractures start from an elastic instability at the surface and spread like turbulence in fluids. Published in Physical Review Letters, this discovery could lead to defect-free, durable, and environmentally friendly materials. Applications include producing highly resistant micro and nano devices.

A new compound enhances naloxone's effectiveness in opioid overdose treatment by binding to a µ-opioid receptor, potentially reducing the need for larger and repeated doses, especially against potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

New research suggests a potential link between the medication Ozempic and a rare condition called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which can lead to blindness. Doctors in Massachusetts have observed this association with semaglutide, Ozempic's active ingredient, but caution that further research is needed to establish a causal connection.

The FDA has prohibited the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food and beverages due to safety concerns. BVO is a modified vegetable oil containing bromine, used to emulsify ingredients in drinks to prevent separation. Over the past 50 years, it has primarily stabilized citrus flavorings in sodas and energy drinks. However, many U.S. beverage manufacturers have already phased out BVO from their products.

New research suggests that the risk of lung cancer decreases sharply after age 75, despite rising with age initially. Studies in mice posted on bioRxiv propose specific genes linked to this decline, indicating a surprising connection to iron metabolism. This finding challenges the common association of cancer with aging and raises questions about the underlying mechanisms behind age-related cancer risk reductions.

🔭 Space & Astronomy

The U.S. Space Force has added Blue Origin and Stoke Space Technologies to its Orbital Services Program-4 (OSP-4) contract, aimed at leveraging emerging commercial launch capabilities for small-satellite missions. OSP-4, initiated in 2019 by the Air Force, has awarded over $190 million for seven missions from Kirtland Air Force Base. It targets payloads over 400 pounds, requiring providers to launch within 12 to 24 months of task order award, with a total contract ceiling of $986 million through October 2028.
