The study introduces xFakeSci, an algorithm designed to distinguish ChatGPT-generated articles from authentic scientific publications. Trained and calibrated on a dataset of fake and real articles, xFakeSci achieved F1 scores of 80-94%, outperforming traditional data mining algorithms, which scored 38-52%. This algorithm represents a significant advancement in detecting AI-generated fake science.

Recent advancements in radiance fields enable high-quality 3D asset creation. StyleSplat applies customizable style transfer to specific 3D objects using 3D Gaussian splatting and reference style images, enhancing control and visual appeal in 3D scenes.

A new class of organic nanoparticles, which are more versatile than inorganic ones, shows promise for diverse applications such as drug delivery and electronics. A recent study highlights the impact of hyperbranching and chemical cross-linking, enhancing their mechanical properties and chemical tunability.

Researchers from Sichuan University have developed an eco-friendly aerogel for radiative cooling using gelatin and DNA from salmon sperm. This new material reflects heat away from buildings, aiding passive cooling. The aerogel's dynamic hydrogen bond network allows easy "water welding" of pieces, requiring no extra energy.

🧬 Biology & Medicine

A large clinical trial in South Africa and Uganda demonstrated that a twice-yearly injection of lenacapavir provides young women with total protection from HIV infection. This new pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug proved more effective than two other daily PrEP pills.

Dried fruits are popular as healthier snack alternatives, but their sugar content raises concerns for people with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). T2D poses serious health risks, including nerve damage, cardiovascular disease, and kidney dysfunction, making the dietary inclusion of dried fruits a complex and debated issue.

Researchers have created 3D models of chromosomes from frozen mammoth cells, which may aid in efforts to resurrect the extinct species. These detailed chromosomal structures provide valuable genetic information that can be used in de-extinction projects and enhance our understanding of ancient DNA.

At a recent summit in Washington, DC, NATO member states pledged over $1 billion to enhance intelligence sharing from national and commercial reconnaissance satellites. This move continues NATO's integration of space assets into military commands, following its recognition of space as a fifth war-fighting domain in 2019 and the creation of the NATO Space Operations Center in 2020. Additionally, NATO announced the establishment of a "space branch" to incorporate emerging capabilities into its security strategy.

A Falcon 9 rocket failed to deliver its payload to orbit due to an engine malfunction, a rare issue for SpaceX. The rocket, launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base with 20 Starlink satellites, could not complete the necessary second-stage burn, resulting in the satellites being deployed to a lower orbit. SpaceX has contacted 5 of the satellites and is working to raise their orbits using their ion thrusters.
