Intel Foundry For Chipmaking, API for Video Generation, Magnetic Prosthetic, Novel Drugs For Eczema, 10 Space Stations Of The Future

🤖 Tech & Computer Science

Intel is spinning off its chipmaking business into an independent subsidiary, Intel Foundry, to address financial losses and a declining stock price. The Foundry will have its own board and report earnings separately. Intel will pause work on factories in Poland and Germany for two years but continue with plants in the U.S.

AI startup Runway has launched an API to integrate its generative video models into third-party platforms. Currently in limited access, the API offers a model called Gen-3 Alpha Turbo, with pricing at one cent per credit. Users must display a "Powered by Runway" banner. Backed by investors like Salesforce and Nvidia, Runway faces competition from OpenAI, Google, and Adobe in the video generation space.

⚛️ Physics and Chemistry

Physicists can accurately describe gravity at large scales but struggle at the quantum level. To understand phenomena like the Big Bang or black hole interiors, new theories are needed that explain gravity at all scales, says Professor Johanna Erdmenger from the University of WĂĽrzburg. Classical laws of gravity break down at very high energies, prompting research into quantum gravity.

A new magnetically controlled prosthetic hand, tested by a participant with an amputated lower arm, enables precise hand motion and the ability to grasp fragile objects. Developed by Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, it uses implanted magnets to predict and execute intended movements. Unlike traditional myoelectric prosthetics that rely on nerve signals, this approach decodes motor intentions through muscle displacement, offering improved dexterity.

🧬 Biology & Medicine

The atopic dermatitis (AD) treatment pipeline is growing rapidly, with many new drugs in development. Lebrikizumab, now FDA-approved, showed promising results in trials, with 43.1% of patients achieving clear or nearly clear skin, compared to 12.7% on placebo.

A study in Nature Communications identified 54 aging-related biomarkers, with GlycA showing the highest hazard ratio for all-cause mortality. Researchers developed a metabolomic aging score to predict disease and mortality risk, uncovering 439 potential causal biomarker-disease pairs. This score offers improved short-term mortality risk prediction.

đź” Space & Astronomy

The International Space Station (ISS) has been a hub for groundbreaking research for over 20 years. With the ISS set to be deorbited by 2030, new space stations are being developed. China already has a crewed station, and ten more are in progress, ensuring continued human presence and research in space after the ISS.

China completed a rehearsal for its new Long March 8A rocket at the Hainan commercial space launch site. Set to launch in December, the rocket, developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), is an improved version of the Long March 8 with increased payload capacity and mission adaptability. It will support large-scale satellite deployments, including China’s planned megaconstellations like the G60 and Guowang.
