Road damage detection is crucial for road safety. This paper introduces YOLOv8-PD, an improved lightweight algorithm based on YOLOv8n, to address issues of poor performance on multi-scale pavement distresses and high detection costs.

Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) like LLaVA excel in visual-linguistic reasoning but are inefficient with high-resolution images and videos due to excessive visual tokens. Inspired by Matryoshka Dolls, M3 (Matryoshka Multimodal Models) addresses this by representing visual content as nested sets of visual tokens with varying granularities, improving efficiency and flexibility.

⚛️ Physics and Chemistry

Researchers have developed a novel miniaturized photodetector that can characterize arbitrary polarization states across a broadband spectrum using a single device and a single-shot measurement. Unlike traditional photodetectors, which require complex integration of multiple elements to enhance detection capabilities, this new photodetector achieves high-dimensional detection without such integration. The study, led by Prof. Wei Li from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, is published in Nature.

Scientists have identified a small, nonhormonal molecule, CDD-2807, that prevents male mice from siring pups, with effects being reversible upon discontinuation. CDD-2807 targets the enzyme STK33, abundant in testes, and linked to sterility in humans. Researchers hope this could lead to male birth control.

Research from the University of Alberta, led by Saiful Hoque, has identified ways to improve the safety of firefighters' clothing. One study found that some protective fibers degrade when exposed to warm water, while another revealed harmful dye compounds in manufacturing water that could weaken fabric protection. These findings highlight vulnerabilities and suggest potential improvements in materials and maintenance practices for firefighters' gear.

Researchers at the University of Buenos Aires have used mathematical modeling to create synthetic birdsong that elicits responses from wild rufous-collared sparrows. This songbird's territorial song, consisting of a brief theme and trill, typically lasts around 2 seconds. The study demonstrates that realistic-sounding synthesized birdsong can prompt increased singing rates in these sparrows, shedding light on their behavior and communication.

Antihypertensive drugs are associated with a small increased risk for eczematous dermatitis in older adults, with the highest association seen for diuretics and calcium channel blockers, in a longitudinal cohort study.

A recent study in BMC Medicine reports a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating whether short-term interventions combining alcohol-metabolizing enzyme substances, ADH1B and ALDH2, with behavioral changes in alcohol consumption can reduce excessive alcohol intake.

đź” Space & Astronomy

The incoming comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS might become as brilliant as Venus during its close approach to Earth this fall, potentially making it visible to the naked eye.

SpaceX plans to launch 23 Starlink internet satellites from Florida on Tuesday morning (May 28). The Falcon 9 rocket is set to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station during a four-hour window starting at 7:30 a.m. EDT (1130 GMT). The launch will be webcast live on SpaceX's X account, starting about five minutes before the window opens.
