LlamaGen introduces a new family of image generation models using the "next-token prediction" approach of large language models for visual generation. It features a high-quality image tokenizer and scalable class-conditional and text-conditional models, achieving state-of-the-art performance on ImageNet benchmarks and significant speed improvements. All models and codes are released for the open-source community.

Researchers at LIDYL, CEA, CNRS, and Université Paris-Saclay have proposed a method to achieve unprecedented light intensities using tightly focused Doppler-boosted lasers. This approach could enable light-matter interactions near the Schwinger limit, which is a regime of extremely strong electromagnetic fields. The method, described in Physical Review Letters, is based on extensive studies since 2019 in collaboration with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

A new "nanostring" mechanical resonator has achieved the highest quality factor ever recorded for a room-temperature device, vibrating for long periods while dissipating minimal energy. Measuring centimetres in length and nanometres in diameter, it could be used to detect ultra-small forces like gravity. Nanomechanical resonators oscillate at high frequencies and are utilized in wireless communication and for detecting the mass of tiny objects such as DNA molecules.

New research has shown that the small molecule BLU-782 can prevent abnormal bone formation in a mouse model of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare disease affecting about one in 2 million people. FOP causes bone to replace skeletal muscle and connective tissue, leading to severe movement restrictions and the formation of a "second skeleton" over time. This molecule offers potential hope for treating and preventing excess bone formation associated with the condition.

Appendectomy remains the standard treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis, despite research suggesting antibiotics as an alternative. Emerging studies indicate that removing the appendix might increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and colorectal cancer. Although the evidence is still inconclusive, some health professionals recommend against preemptive removal of the appendix.

Researchers have developed a water-soluble version of the bacterial enzyme histidine kinase, which is a promising target for new antibiotics. By replacing four hydrophobic amino acids with three hydrophilic ones, the enzyme retained its natural functions, facilitating rapid drug screening. This advancement could lead to a new class of antibiotics, addressing the urgent need to combat antibiotic resistance.

An experimental two-in-one vaccine, mRNA-1083, showed strong immune responses against both the flu and COVID-19 in a clinical trial involving adults 50 and older. Developed by Moderna, the combo shot outperformed separate vaccines for COVID-19 and the flu. These findings, pending peer review, will be presented at a medical conference and published in a scientific journal.

ASH, used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years, has antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties that help manage stress, anxiety, and inflammation. It shows promise in reducing cognitive decline and aiding conditions like type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. While studies indicate cognitive benefits and reduced stress, more research is needed to fully understand its long-term effects and mechanisms.

🔭 Space & Astronomy

New computer simulations suggest that radar reflections previously thought to indicate a lake of liquid water beneath Mars' southern ice cap could instead be caused by closely compacted layers of ice. In 2018, the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter detected what seemed to be a 20-kilometer-wide lake of liquid water under 1.5 km of ice. Similar findings indicated potentially dozens of lakes, some too close to the surface for liquid water to exist due to Mars' cold temperatures and low atmospheric pressure.

NASA will provide live coverage starting at 6:30 a.m. EDT on June 13 for a six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk by astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Matt Dominick. They will remove a faulty electronics box from a communications antenna and collect microbial samples from the ISS exterior. Coverage will be available on NASA+, NASA Television, the NASA app, YouTube, and NASA's website.
