This paper introduces BCRN, a model for single image super-resolution using BSConv and ConvNeXt residual structures. It incorporates enhanced spatial and contrast-aware attention to reduce parameters and improve performance. BCRN outperforms other lightweight models on benchmark datasets. Code is available at https://github.com/kptx666/BCRN.

This paper highlights the need to quantify variance in evaluation benchmarks for large language models (LLMs). It defines and measures metrics like seed variance and monotonicity, analyzes various models, and suggests techniques to reduce variance. The study provides insights and recommendations for practitioners to improve the reliability of LLM comparisons.

⚛️ Physics and Chemistry

Physicists led by University of Rochester's Regina Demina have achieved a significant result in quantum entanglement. They demonstrated that measuring one of a pair of entangled particles instantaneously affects the other, regardless of the distance between them. This phenomenon, once dubbed "spooky action at a distance" by Einstein, has been observed between stable particles like photons or electrons.

Olaplex, a hair repair brand, received high praise from K. Barry Sharpless, a two-time Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, who called it the most interesting company based on click chemistry, a field he helped develop. Sharpless made this remark during his 2019 Priestley Medal acceptance address. Olaplex is credited with creating a new category of hair repair bond builders, addressing damage from harsh shampoos, color treatments, and concerns over formaldehyde in some hair products.

🧬 Biology & Medicine

Malaria, primarily caused by Plasmodium falciparum, is the leading parasitic disease globally, with 94% of cases in Africa and 80% of deaths in children under five. From 2000 to 2015, international antimalarial efforts reduced incidence and mortality by 27% and 50%, respectively. However, from 2015 to 2020, deaths stabilized at around 550,000 annually. In 2021, cases rose to 241 million with 627,000 deaths. Contributing factors include healthcare diversion due to COVID-19, P. falciparum resistance to artemisinin, and mosquito resistance to pyrethroids.

Chemotherapy weakens immune systems, making cancer patients vulnerable to deadly infections. Monitoring white blood cell levels is crucial to avoid severe conditions like neutropenia. Leuko is developing an at-home device using light and AI to track white blood cell counts through fingernails, offering remote health monitoring for patients undergoing treatment.

Brainstem cells recently discovered regulate inflammation by detecting and controlling inflammatory signals, protecting healthy tissues during injury. This expands the brainstem's role beyond basic functions like heart rate and breathing, offering new treatment avenues for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, the brain maintains stability in bodily functions like heart rate and blood pressure through chemical signals, illustrating the principle of homeostasis—keeping internal systems stable amidst changing conditions.

The Plants for Joints trial examined a lifestyle intervention combining a plant-based diet, physical activity, and stress management in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients over 2 years. Initially reducing disease activity significantly, the intervention continued to show benefits with 62% of participants completing the follow-up, despite some discontinuations due to time constraints or personal reasons.

The US Space Force has chosen Blue Origin to join SpaceX and United Launch Alliance as a military launch contractor. This decision, announced recently, opens up competition for 30 military launch contracts worth up to $5.6 billion over the next five years. The move aims to diversify launch providers and reduce dependence on a few companies, marking a significant shift in the National Security Space Launch program.
