Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), caused by ruptured brain blood vessels, leads to severe damage and often functional disability or death. Rapid diagnosis via brain CT imaging is critical but hindered by image complexity and a lack of specialist radiologists. To address this, researchers collected a real-world dataset for ICH classification and proposed a dual-task vision transformer (DTViT) model. DTViT uses attention mechanisms to extract features and includes two decoders to detect ICH presence and classify hemorrhage types (Deep, Subcortical, Lobar). Experimental results show DTViT's effectiveness on real-world test data.

Insight-V introduces advancements in reasoning capabilities for multi-modal large language models (MLLMs). It addresses challenges in generating high-quality, long-chain reasoning data for vision-language tasks and optimizing training pipelines. Using a two-step process, Insight-V scalably creates diverse and structured reasoning paths with quality assurance. To enhance model performance, a multi-agent system is deployed: a reasoning agent for long-chain reasoning and a summary agent to evaluate and summarize outputs. The iterative DPO algorithm further stabilizes and improves reasoning quality. Based on LLaVA-NeXT, Insight-V demonstrates significant gains in visual reasoning and maintains strong performance in perception-focused tasks.

KIST researchers used qudits in quantum computing to achieve chemical accuracy for molecular calculations without error mitigation. This breakthrough enables efficient high-dimensional computations, advancing applications in drug discovery, batteries, and climate modeling.

Researchers developed a framework to evaluate Approximate Quantum Error Correction (AQEC) codes, identifying subsystem variance as a key parameter to distinguish trivial from non-trivial codes. This work links AQEC effectiveness to quantum circuit complexity and extends beyond quantum computing, offering insights into condensed matter physics and quantum gravity. The findings could aid in building reliable quantum computers and bridging quantum mechanics with general relativity.

The approval of KarXT, a novel schizophrenia drug targeting muscarinic receptors, has sparked optimism for psychiatric medicine. Unlike traditional dopamine-focused treatments, KarXT combines xanomeline and trospium to reduce psychotic symptoms with fewer side effects. While its success has renewed interest in muscarinic drugs, challenges remain. Abbvie’s emraclidine, an M4 receptor modulator, failed in trials, raising questions about whether targeting both M1 and M4 receptors is necessary. KarXT is also being explored for Alzheimer’s, bipolar disorder, and addiction. However, real-world challenges, such as adherence due to side effects, highlight the need for further research.

Interest is growing in using nutrition to slow or prevent neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Evidence suggests diets like the Mediterranean (MeDi) and MIND diets may delay PD onset and reduce symptoms, potentially through gut microbiome improvements. Healthy dietary patterns, including high intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and flavonoid-rich foods, show protective benefits, while ultra-processed foods and high-protein diets can worsen symptoms or interfere with medications. Practical strategies include small, sustainable dietary changes and prioritizing whole, plant-based foods. Though promising, more research is needed to establish diet as a definitive treatment.

NYU Langone Health has achieved a global milestone by performing the first fully robotic double lung transplant, led by Dr. Stephanie H. Chang. Using the da Vinci Xi robotic system, surgeons transplanted both lungs into a 57-year-old COPD patient with minimal invasiveness, marking a breakthrough in robotic surgery and patient care. This follows NYU Langone’s earlier success with the nation’s first robotic single lung transplant. The institution is now a leader in robotic transplant surgery, with a strong record of innovation, training, and patient outcomes.

SpaceX’s Starship rocket, the largest ever built, poses significant environmental and structural concerns as CEO Elon Musk aims for 100 launches annually. A recent study revealed the rocket generates noise levels far exceeding SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and NASA’s SLS, creating risks for nearby areas like Port Isabel and South Padre Island, Texas. The October test flight produced intense sonic booms during reentry and hot staging ring separation, with noise capable of breaking glass and damaging structures. Environmental groups also warn of harm to local wildlife, including endangered species, at SpaceX’s Boca Chica site. Additional noise impact assessments are needed as launch frequency increases.

NASA has started assembling the SLS rocket for the Artemis II mission, aiming to send astronauts on a lunar flyby. The mission faces delays due to issues with the Orion spacecraft's heat shield, likely pushing the launch to late 2025 or 2026. Despite this, assembly is progressing, indicating no major changes to the heat shield for now.
