The paper solves a training challenge in spiking neural networks (SNNs), enabling them to match artificial neural networks (ANNs) in performance. The approach achieves energy efficiency and optimizes SNNs for hardware with minimal spikes per neuron.

This paper proposes combining stereo event cameras with a fixed-frequency active sensor, like LiDAR, to improve depth estimation in challenging scenarios where events don't trigger due to lack of motion or texture. By using sparse depth data to generate fictitious events, the method compensates for missing information, outperforming current fusion techniques in event-based stereo matching.

Sublime Systems, an MIT spinout, has developed a cement alternative inspired by ancient Roman methods. Unlike modern cement, which requires extremely high temperatures and emits significant carbon dioxide, this new approach uses electrochemistry to produce durable cement without the high heat. This innovation could reduce the environmental impact of cement production while maintaining its strength and durability.

Researchers have developed an X-ray imaging technique using the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) to precisely study the 3D nanostructure of copper foams, crucial for inertial fusion energy experiments. This breakthrough allows scientists to better understand and optimize these foams for fusion, a potential clean energy source.

A study in mice suggests that stress can make people feel sick by disrupting gut bacteria. The stressed brain shuts down specific gut glands, impacting both the bacteria and the immune system. This research highlights the "top-down" influence of psychological states on gut bacteria, adding a new perspective to the gut-brain connection.

Inflammation, triggered by stress or poor diet during pregnancy, can increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in babies. A University of Oklahoma researcher has received a grant to study how this risk develops and explore ways to make fetuses more resilient to inflammation.

The FDA has approved Zurnai, the first nalmefene hydrochloride auto-injector, for treating opioid overdoses in people aged 12 and older. Zurnai delivers a 1.5 mg dose to reverse overdose symptoms like respiratory depression. This new prescription-only option broadens access to life-saving opioid overdose reversal agents.

NASA’s NEOWISE mission has officially ended after over 10 years of searching for asteroids and comets that could threaten Earth. The spacecraft's transmitter was turned off for the last time, marking the conclusion of its planetary defense mission.

Following a Chinese rocket launch on August 6, over 50 pieces of space debris were detected, potentially threatening satellites in low Earth orbit. The launch, aimed at deploying 18 broadband satellites for a Starlink-like megaconstellation, involved a Long March 6A rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.
